No professional sports organization markets equal footing in the manner of the NFL: it’s the entire brand. Yet following 10 weeks during the current schedule, this doesn't represent a landscape that is equally balanced between the good, the bad and the mediocre. Rather, we see a situation where most of the league is simply adequate.
In the NFC, for the most part, we see clearer definition. Los Angeles and Seattle (both standing at seven wins, two losses) appear to be the most balanced franchises across the league, and secured decisive victories on Sunday. Philadelphia at 6-2 despite their struggles still have a deeply skilled squad in the league, comparable to the Packers (5-2-1). The Lions also (6-3 standing), with their fluctuating form in trench play while managing internal staff conflicts, have proven they can defeat strong franchises. For each of these squads, it's straightforward to envision a route to the final game.
In the AFC however, the playoff picture remains completely chaotic. The current division frontrunners at this stage: the Colts, Patriots, Broncos (each with 8-2 records) along with Pittsburgh (five wins, four losses). Take another look. Not the Chiefs. No Bills inclusion. Neither Ravens nor Bengals. The usual contenders, backed by the league’s best quarterbacks, display either glaring roster weaknesses or have suffered medical setbacks.
In some ways, this is exactly what the league wants. Yet observing this year’s four division leaders within the conference still feels strange. Components of every squad meet championship standards, though not comprehensively. Were you questioned to finalize your conference championship predictions today, would you comfortably choose any among these four teams?
Beginning with the Colts, the signal-caller hasn’t quite reached complete disaster level. Yet the past two games have caused alarm. He's reverting to giving away possessions and faltering under duress. He suffered seven sacks versus Atlanta in the weekend game, and endured a five-minute stretch where he delivered a pick and fumbled three times. This follows he committed turnovers five separate times versus Pittsburgh.
The Colts’ offense excelled during early games as Jones prevented game-changing errors. Taylor along with the blockers make the Colts good enough to survive some negative plays, like their German performance. But Jones returning to his historically mistake-heavy play would finish any playoff run.
The Patriots seem fairly alike. Previously, they were considered jokes. Now, they’re football's most unexpected success and the hottest team in the NFL following seven consecutive victories. Except for committing turnover errors a contest they should have won against Pittsburgh, they’d be sitting nine wins, one loss with the best record. In the prior year, they seemed veteran and plodding. Today they appear inexperienced, speedy and bold. Nevertheless, one cannot overlook the weakness of New England's opponents. They've encountered the most manageable schedule throughout football, yet vulnerabilities remain. The signal-caller has taken sacks on 35 occasions – ranking second league-wide – with several hits he absorbed on Sunday appeared dangerous. With continued play, those beatings accumulate.
The Broncos hold eight wins similarly, yet it seems like they're nervously waiting. Bo Nix has performed unevenly, with the attack struggling, as the defense handles all the heavy lifting. Absent adequate signal-calling, Denver cannot intimidate any playoff team. Los Angeles remains nearby in the Western division with seven wins, but the injuries along their offensive line will make it tough for extended playoff success.
Meanwhile, Pittsburgh exists, somehow still leading their division notwithstanding receiving a decisive loss to Los Angeles in the evening game. They have a negative point differential, their defensive unit frequently falters, and the QB's current constraints during his career phase persistently appear. They’re 5–4 and holding on, however, the Ravens, with their QB returning to health with manageable games ahead, have won three consecutive. This development isn't entirely shocking that the Ravens have narrowed to within one game of Pittsburgh, but that it has arrived so quickly highlights deficiencies within Pittsburgh’s inconsistencies. That the Ravens started the season 1-5 and currently seem capable of division victory is telling about the conference as a whole.
Baltimore constitutes part of the Big Three – alongside the Bills and Chiefs – fueled by former MVP signal-callers, who would still strike the highest anxiety for opponents if they qualified. They represent undesirable playoff matchups, however, both franchises persistently undermine themselves.
Previously, Buffalo was celebrating after beating the Chiefs. During Sunday's action they experienced one of the most disappointing losses this year. They didn’t just lose to the Dolphins; they suffered humiliation, dropping a 30-13 road game. It was Miami’s first win against Buffalo in more than 1,000 days.
