Glasgow Warriors began their European journey in ideal fashion with a valuable four-try away victory against Sale.
Taking advantage of the elements at their backs, the hosts started strongly and raced to a 14-0 lead within the first quarter. Tries from the Sale skipper and teenage debutant Ollie Davies gave them early control.
But, Glasgow fought back admirably with a pair of scores prior to the interval. Forward Hiddleston and back-rower Rory Darge both crossed to reduce the gap.
Further after the break tries from Kyle Steyn and Stafford McDowall pushed Glasgow's advantage to 26-14. Marius Louw's reply for Sale promised a nervous finish, but the visitors held firm to secure a major opening win.
Play started with a quick try as Sale captain Ernst van Rhyn drove over from short distance after just two minutes. A first-half injury to centre Ma'asi-White brought 19-year-old Ollie Davies into the fray for his cup debut.
Davies made an instant contribution. Switching to fly-half, he took a good support line to take an offload and score, extending the home side's advantage.
Facing difficult conditions, the Warriors used their forward power to get back into the game. A powerful driving maul was finished by hooker Hiddleston. Prior to the break, Rory Darge barged over, with Hastings' kick making it a narrow deficit at the interval.
The Scottish club seized the advantage for the first occasion soon after the restart. A misjudged box-kick was collected by number eight Jack Dempsey, who fed skipper Kyle Steyn to burst through a challenge and sprint to the try-line.
Now in the driving seat, Glasgow clinched the fourth try when McDowall ran through a tackle to score his 100th appearance for the team. That score capped a run of twenty-six unanswered points.
The hosts gave themselves a late hope when Marius Louw used neat footwork to score. The conversion made it a five-point game with time remaining.
One last opportunity arose for Sale from a line-out in the corner, but they failed to secure the possession, sealing the Warriors' victory.
Sale Sharks must bounce back ahead of a trip to face Clermont next Saturday. In contrast, Glasgow will host European giants Toulouse to Scotstoun.
Both sides are placed in a competitive first pool that also includes the English side and Durban-based team the Hollywoodbets Sharks.
