Melbourne Storm forward Eli Katoa has been officially ruled out the entire 2026 rugby league season as he continues his recovery at home in Victoria, following returning from a extended period in New Zealand where he underwent brain surgery.
The 25-year-old athlete suffered three separate head injuries during a single afternoon while playing for Tonga in a international match against the Kiwis. Subsequently, he experienced seizures while off the field, necessitating emergency medical attention.
A medical operation to relieve a brain bleed resulted in the player hospitalized and initially unable to travel to his club base.
The club announced this week that the forward has finally returned home and is on the mend, having also made a brief visit to a local medical facility.
“His health and recovery are our number one priority,” said the club's chief executive a team official. “It is great to have him back home and under the care of our medical staff and specialist physicians.”
Rodski noted that the player is improving each day and is looking forward to continuing his rehabilitation from home.
Importantly, the CEO stated that there is no timeframe for his return to health or a comeback to the field.
“In consultation with our doctor and neurology experts, Eli will not return to training this pre-season and is ruled out for the 2026 season,” Rodski declared. “There is a long road ahead in his recovery, and his focus will be on returning to full health before considering a potential comeback to rugby league activities.”
Rodski finished by noting that Katoa is a highly valued and respected member of our team and club, and that the Storm family will rally around him and assist him during his recovery.
The NRL is currently finalizing its inquiry into the circumstances that led to Katoa’s surgery.
The powerful forward, who was selected for the league's best lineup at the recent Dally M awards, seemed to sustain a head injury during the pregame routine for the Pacific Championship match.
Despite this, he was allowed to play in the match and endured two more head impacts before being substituted in the later stages.
Katoa’s condition worsened rapidly, and he needed medical oxygen beside the field before being removed from the field on a stretcher.
The league has attempted to address issues around concussions in the game in recent seasons, implementing crackdowns on dangerous contact and lengthening the post-concussion stand down period for affected players.
