What's Inside the Briefcase Henry Unlocks in Stranger Things?

Throughout a large portion of the fifth and final season of *Stranger Things*, the young Holly Wheeler and Max Mayfield find themselves trapped within a psychic prison forged from the recollections of the villain Henry. The search for freedom in "Escape from Camazotz" has them experience a defining event from Henry's childhood—a moment that may just hold the means to overcome him for good.

The Discovery in the Mine Shaft

Upon meeting Max in the mental landscape known as Camazotz, Max reveals she is sheltering in a grotto that Henry is terrified of. An accidental discovery a telescope found in Henry's old home lets Holly see that the true terror lies beyond the cave. When she lines up her view with the shape, she and Max plummet into a abandoned tunnel.

An Interdimensional Incident and Stolen Research

*The First Shadow* opens with the infamous Philadelphia Experiment, which reportedly teleported a U.S. Navy ship into a plane later called the Abyss. It faced creatures, and the only one to return was the ship's commander, who came back in a unresponsive state with an different blood composition.

That survivor's offspring, the future Dr. Brenner, sought to replicate this phenomenon in Nevada. However, a treacherous employee stole research materials to give to the Communist spies, who were keen to start their own interdimensional projects. This spy in the cavern was that very thief.

The Briefcase's Contents

Given what is understood of the doctor's experiments, the briefcase most likely held vials of the altered blood. In the scene, Henry is already bleeding. He likely becomes contaminated upon opening the case, leading to the awakening of his powers—powers he would genetically impart to the kids under Brenner's care.

A second theory, the container could have held strange particles that eventually found its way to Hawkins Laboratory, where it acts to anchor the mirror dimension. *The First Shadow* reveals that young Henry was transported in the Abyss, reappearing after half a day as a different person. From then on, he fights the whispers of a sinister presence, reminiscent of how the character Will was possessed by the entity in an earlier season.

The reason Henry avoids the cave associated with the mine demonstrates how deeply scarring the event was for him. While he orchestrates the collective consciousness and attempts to pull the Abyss into Hawkins, a fragment of his psyche still exists. Fear is his tool, and the narrative points to a final confrontation between him and Will, who has deliberately faced his own deepest fears to fortify himself.

His confrontation has effectively disarmed Vecna. Furthermore, Will now is aware of what the monster's own weakness, and this may grant a key upper hand in the endgame conflict ahead.
